Adjectives

Understanding ‘Adjectives’ in English

Adjectives are words that describe or give more information about nouns or pronouns. They make our speaking and writing more precise, colourful, and easy to understand.

Example:
The tall building.
She is happy.
I bought a small, red bag.

Without adjectives, English becomes flat. With adjectives, sentences become clearer.

1. WHAT DO ADJECTIVES DO?

Adjectives can describe:

  1. Appearance – tall, short, beautiful
  2. Size – big, small, tiny
  3. Shape – round, square, flat
  4. Colour – red, blue, golden
  5. Age – old, new, young
  6. Quality/personality – smart, lazy, polite
  7. Origin – Indian, French, Asian
  8. Material – wooden, plastic, cotton
  9. Opinion – good, terrible, amazing

Example:

2. POSITION OF ADJECTIVES

Adjectives can appear in two common positions:

A. Before a noun (Attributive position)

This is the most common.
Example:
a big dog
an interesting book
the blue car

B. After verbs like “be, appear, seem, look, feel” (Predicative position)

Example:
The movie is boring.
She looks tired.
He seems confident.

3. ORDER OF ADJECTIVES

If there is more than one adjective, they follow a natural order:

  1. Opinion
  2. Size
  3. Age
  4. Shape
  5. Colour
  6. Origin
  7. Material
  8. Noun

Example:

You don’t need to memorise this perfectly, but knowing the pattern helps you sound natural.

Positive → Comparative → Superlative

  • tall → taller → tallest
